People reported seeing Robert move from window to window and visitors would comment Robert’s expressions would change with the conversations in the room. Anne didn’t care for Robert and upon Gene’s death, the doll was put into a cedar chest in the attic. Many years later the doll was found and donated to the Key West Art and Historical Society. Gene Otto was an artist… thus the “Artist House” name. Anne played at the La Concha hotel when they moved to Key West. The hotel renamed the room she played in The Rainbow room in her honor as she used to play at The Rainbow Room at Radio City, New York.

Large flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers come with every room, and there's Wi-Fi available throughout the property. How much does it cost to stay at The Artist House?

It was while painting and continuing his studies in Paris that he met Annette Parker, a native of Boston, who was studying music there at that time. After Anne finished her studies in Paris, the couple moved to New York for several years during which Anne performed at the celebrated Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center as an accomplished pianist. Several years later, the Otto’s moved back to Key West, where Anne dedicated her time to more domestic aspects of life at 534 Eaton Street, their home for the next 40 years. Gene died in 1974, and Anne two years later, but they live on in his art and in their beautiful and beloved house and garden. The spirit and the influence of Gene and Anne and the entire Otto family are still very much a part of the fabric and foundation of The Artist House, and the City of Key West as well. The building, antiques, garden, and “spirit” of The Artist House are a treasure for everyone to enjoy.

The room offers a private bath with glass shower and a unique vintage/glam style. Greet the day in this large second floor room featuring a queen bed and matching dresser. A built in armoire, TV and polished Dade County pine floors all add to the nostalgia of the room.

As Gene grew older, mishaps and bad luck were always blamed on Robert. Over the years our Key West bed and breakfast has been the focus of several enchanting stories. We can’t vouch for all the stories but they have made the rounds in Key West and around the globe. Every so-called “encounter” was friendly and either involved the “spirit” of Anne or Gene’s stuffed doll and alter ego friend Robert.

A couple of power outages beyond the control of management marred things slightly. Also, the shower area was not properly cleaned prior to our check in. For what they are charging, they can do better. The breakfast is great. Lots of variety and delicious. The manager during our stay, Jessica, is more than good. Very nice, responsive, and funny.I would recommend this property. Gene, as friends called him, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago and the Art Students League in New York before travelling to Europe where he developed a personal style decidedly his own.

The year was 1904, and a young girl believed to be Bahamian descent gave him a life-sized doll made of fabric stuffed with straw. The doll was given as a gift, or maybe as retaliation for a wrongdoing as some locals believe. Upon entering your room, you’ll find a chilled bottle of bubbly, unique local chocolates, and a tropical-yet-romantic bouquet of flowers.

Norwegian Cruise Line Review for April 2024 Best Cruise Lines

Items are priced a la carte and will be made to order, with each delivered when ready, rather than all at once. I went with a crabcake, a beefsteak tomato with onions and balsamic vinaigrette, and a petite (5-ounce) filet mignon with a side of truffle fries. If you're someone who doesn't eat meat, fish or seafood, you might consider dining elsewhere. If your stomach is rumbling a bit too much before dinner, the luxuriously appointed Observation Lounge on Deck 17 forward offers gratis between-meal snacks daily from 3 to 5 p.m. The ship has 44 accessible staterooms across inside, outside, balcony and The Haven categories. They offer such accommodations as additional square footage, wider doorways, and shower stools and toilet seat risers in the bathrooms.

In fact, seating is in such short supply that if you don't get to the club at least 30 minutes prior to showtime, you'll be standing. The place is so popular that if you don't arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes ahead of time, you won't even be able to get through the doors. The state-of-the-art fitness center features yoga equipment, free weights and TechnoGym machines like bikes, ellipticals, rowers and treadmills. From Broadway-caliber shows and live music to dance parties, bingo, trivia, video games, slides and games like "Deal or No Deal," there's a lot that graces the Freestyle Daily, Norwegian Viva's daily schedule of activities. I prefer sweet drinks, so I went with peanut butter whiskey and club soda. Be sure to say hello to Craig — one of the best bartenders I've ever had on a ship — who warned me that adding simple syrup to the mix would make it too sweet.

The two-level Mandara Spa is also nearby, with an entrance on Deck 16. The Haven suite complex also has a private wake-facing pool and hot tubs on decks 16 and 17 for passengers booked in The Haven suite enclave. Free soft-serve machines can be found in the buffet and outside on Oceanwalk, near Indulge.

However, many beverages require an additional charge, and there are always restaurants available that come with either à la carte pricing or incur a per person charge. A majority of the activities on board are included, so you are definitely able to have a great vacation without paying anything extra on board. Sitka is the first and oldest city in Alaska so it’s fitting that it was the very first port of the 2024 cruise ship season. I last visited here in late October on the very last cruise of the 2023 season. And I did essentially the exact same thing today as I did 5 months ago. Then I hit the waterfront on the way back to the ship where I snapped some photos and saw my first eagle of the trip perched in a tree near the playground stalking tourist children fattened up from 45 soft serve cones in two days.

Norwegian Sun: Best for retirees

Several others made the same mistake, which caused congestion in the space. Don't feel bad if you find yourself at a dead end the first time you pass through; it happens to most of us. This was particularly true on the day we sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar. There wasn't a single unoccupied table; I circled for 20 minutes to pounce on a table that someone had just vacated. The neutral color palette is worlds away from the stark white with green and purple hues that punctuate previous versions. And that aesthetic carries through to the Studio Lounge, a space exclusive to passengers booked in studio cabins.

norwegian cruise review norwegian cruise review

But perhaps the biggest differentiator is the entertainment, with the ship offering a version of the Broadway show "Beetlejuice." The vessel itself is smaller than ships in the line's previous class, and although it's family-friendly, it also houses a downsized version of the Splash Academy kids club, which lacks dedicated teen spaces. However, the ship has seen growth in the way of a larger onboard suite area with a better location and one of the fleet's largest go-kart tracks — something the Prima Class adopted from previous hardware. The bigger Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss all have an 82-cabin solo complex, while two older ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — have solo areas with 59 cabins.

Unfortunately, coffee there isn't covered by the basic alcohol package that's included with most fares. If you have a dining package, you can select any four food items, including desserts. A small wall-mounted touchscreen pad near the door controls the temperature and allows you to activate "do not disturb" and "make up room" options. Instead, they have been replaced by more neutral carpeting with triangles that point the way.

The line's two newest vessels, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian VIva, have 72-cabin solo complexes spread over two decks. At 169,116 tons and carrying 3,958 passengers, Norwegian Encore is the largest ship in the Norwegian fleet. That means it has the most space for the many over-the-top family fun zones that are at the core of the four Breakaway-Plus vessels — a series of ships that was specifically designed with families in mind. Norwegian Breakaway restaurants are spread over multiple decks, allowing for easy access to food from all corners of the ship. And for those who wish to enjoy their meals in the privacy of their cabin, room service is available around the clock for a flat rate. Our award-winning ships are designed for you to enjoy as you choose while cruising to beautiful destinations around the world.

I’d love to sail on a newer Norwegian ship so I could experience one of their full-length Broadway musicals and larger scale production shows. The smaller and older ships tend to be used for port-intensive itineraries that are more destination focused. To take advantage of the cheap cruise fare, we opted to book an inside cabin guarantee onboard Norwegian Sun. I often choose to sail in an inside cabin because the price is always right and I never spend too much time in my cabin anyway. I was shocked by how small the Garden Cafe was onboard Norwegian Sun. Hayley and I looked around to ensure we weren’t missing the other side of the venue somewhere.

Passengers can withdraw cash from onboard ATMs but will pay a hefty surcharge. The vessel will spend the winter months (roughly mid-November through mid-April) offering seven-night Caribbean voyages from San Juan. The rest of the year, it will be based in Lisbon, from which it will conduct Mediterranean and Greek Isles itineraries that range from nine to 11 nights. It will also sail a handful of voyages from Rome and Athens, Greece. Note that the ship does not have laser tag or a basketball court, as do other NCL ships. Also on Deck 18 is the entrance to Viva Speedway, the ship's go-kart track.

Called Entourage, the teen zone is a place for teens to hang out, dance and play games, and it's supervised by counselors who plan activities and challenges. Norwegian also has rooms on its ships for babies and toddlers ages 6 months to 3 years. Called Guppies, the program offers parents a place to play with their youngest children, with occasional youth staff-led activities and games. The top decks of a few Norwegian ships — mostly the bigger ones — also have a ropes course, a climbing wall or both.

The go-kart tracks (now on Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy) are quickly becoming Norwegian's signature can-you-believe-this-is-on-a-ship attraction, and they truly are impressive. The biggest two of them, on Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, are nearly 1,400 feet long and sprawl over three decks. Norwegian ships also all have Mandara Spas, which can be quite big on the bigger vessels, and there are fitness centers on every ship.

Norwegian is known for offering a wide range of accommodations on its ships. You'll find everything from relatively low-cost, windowless inside cabins that measure as little as 135 square feet (perfect for the budget traveler) to massive, multi-room suites that are more than 50 times that size. However, unlike Royal Caribbean, Norwegian hasn't retained any of the trappings of old-style cruising.

He said the port will continue reduced spending levels for promotions, advertising, travel, sponsorships and consultants. Poole said, with cruising resuming, the port will have increases in various other expenses, including for service contracts, utilities and public safety. Additionally, there will be 630 half-day sailings of the Victory 1 gambling ship. The money will help cover its losses stemming from a 16½-month shutdown of the cruise industry locally because of COVID-19. Carnival said it also has a process in place to randomly test a large percentage of its crew on a rotating basis multiple days per week, even though all are vaccinated.

Two of the passengers were children who did not have the COVID-19 vaccine, and the third was a vaccinated parent of one of the children, according to Port Canaveral officials. "Even with the vast majority of our onboard population highly vaccinated we are seeing more covid positive cases with vaccinated guests," Bayley said, in the post. "The Delta variant is now spreading rapidly with over 92,000 new infections yesterday alone in the USA and in Florida one of the industry's major markets there were over 17,000 cases yesterday." As of Saturday, all guests will be required to show proof of a negative Covid test, regardless of their vaccination status, Carnival said. “[P]arents of unvaccinated children under 12 years of age say that there is ‘nothing for the kids to do at all, besides the pool’ and that kids couldn’t get off the ship when it visited ports,” Smith wrote on Aug. 19.

Royal Caribbean shares tumble as 6 Covid cases discovered on board a ship, cruise line expands U.S. testing policy

Even on a good day outside of the pandemic, cruises are challenging environments from an infection-control standpoint, Ostrosky says. "Each guest and their immediate travel parties are disembarking in Freeport, The Bahamas today, and separately traveling home via private transportation," the cruise operator said. CDC warns older adults, travelers in COVID high-risk groups not to take cruises, even if they're vaccinated

According to The Washington Post, Carnival said it announced last week that there were positive cases on board but did not disclose how many cases there were at that time. The change comes as the U.S. faces its fourth wave of COVID-19, driven by the delta variant. As of Friday, the country has reported 987,417 new cases and 6,037 virus-related deaths in the past week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Sailing on the Carnival Vista to several ports in the Caribbean, Marilyn Tackett became ill while on a port visit in Belize. The ship doctor gave the retired Sunday school teacher a Covid-19 test. Eventually, she was sent by air ambulance to Oklahoma, where she died while on a ventilator on Aug. 14.

Three passengers tested positive for COVID-19 at the end of the recent inaugural seven-night sailing from Port Canaveral of Carnival Cruise Line’s newest and largest ship, the Mardi Gras. Cruises are even particularly risky when compared to other types of travel, like driving or flying, because they present more opportunities for prolonged exposure. "Frankly, the risk on a two-hour flight where everyone is masked and airflow is good is [lower] than being on a cruise ship for five days straight," says Dr. Preeti Malani, chief health officer at the University of Michigan. Only one of the positive cases was a passenger; the remaining 26 were crew members. All 27 people were vaccinated and are experiencing mild or no symptoms, the country's tourism board said.

At the time of this writing Will Ashworth did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities. “[C]ome the end of July, the cruise operator’s new ship, Mardi Gras, will sail from Port Canaveral on a seven-day Caribbean cruise,” I wrote on June 28. After hearing the presentation, Port Authority Chairman Wayne Justice noted that there is excitement about the return of cruising at the port — which is expected to lead to a return to profits in the coming budget year. He is using estimates of passenger counts that are much lower than the port has historically seen. Poole said he was conservative in his projections for port revenue from cruise operations.

covid on cruise ships

The cruise required vaccination, and approximately 96% of all 4,336 passengers and crew were reportedly vaccinated, but nobody was required to present a negative Covid test before boarding. After four days on the water, the ship reported a 27-person Covid outbreak spanning both passengers and crew. One of the passengers, the 77-year-old, died 10 days later — the first such reported death since cruises restarted in the United States in June. In July, four vaccinated adults and two unvaccinated children tested positive for COVID-19 on a Royal Caribbean ship that had required passengers 16 and older to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and all passengers to receive a negative test before boarding. Last week, 27 people – 26 of whom were crew members – tested positive for COVID-19 on Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Vista ship. More than 99% of crew members were vaccinated on the ship and 96.5% of passengers were vaccinated, according to the Belize Tourism Board.

Port Canaveral Secretary/Treasurer Robyn Hattaway expressed some frustration during Wednesday's Canaveral Port Authority meeting about how long it was taking for the port to get its ARPA money. Even with the ARPA money, Port Canaveral expects to report losses of $39.48 million during the current budget year. "We can try to do cruises as safely as possible, but we are going to have breakthrough cases," says Ostrosky. You eat and drink indoors at buffet restaurants with large communal tables, attend shows in theaters and touch all kinds of surfaces, from railings to casino games. If an outbreak happens at sea, you're restricted to the boat, which can make the outbreak harder to contain and treat.

Relying on a negative Covid test is also a flawed strategy

In the Mardi Gras incident, three Carnival Cruise Line passengers had COVID-19 on the inaugural sailing of the ship from Port Canaveral on July 31. Some of the cruise companies are fighting another battle, too — against state governments that have passed laws or executive orders aimed at stopping vaccine mandates. On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott passed an executive order banning any state or local mandates requiring Covid vaccination. In Florida, home to multiple popular cruise departure ports, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order in May prohibiting vaccine passports statewide.

CDC protocol says at least 95% of passengers and crew must show proof of vaccination to board a cruise ship. The port said it lost an estimated $113.6 million in cruise ship and cruise-related parking revenue during the shutdown, which began in March 2020. Pre-pandemic, about 80% of the port's revenue came from various fees it charged cruise ships and from cruise passenger parking. The appearance of COVID-19 on the Mardi Gras as cruising returned to Port Canaveral is a sign of just how precarious the restart of cruising can be. Due to the rapidly spreading delta coronavirus variant, the cruise line will be expanding its test procedures for cruises departing from the U.S. that are five nights or longer.

So far, Carnival and other cruise lines have dealt with the cases without disrupting their ship schedules. "We look forward to a future when more people are vaccinated and the numbers are lower, perhaps we're over the delta variant," Ostrosky says. Several cruise companies, including Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line, are cracking down on vaccine requirements.

A recent story appeared in Jim Walker’s Cruise Law News detailing the death of a 77-year-old woman who took a Carnival cruise with her family, leaving Galveston, Texas on July 31. During the pandemic, the port reduced its staff by 43% — from 268 positions to 153. That was done through a combination of 68 permanent layoffs, 17 unpaid furloughs, and not filling 30 positions that were left vacant because of retirement or employees taking jobs elsewhere. But that's still less than the port's pre-pandemic staffing level.

That's an onerous process, and difficult to organize and pull off, especially in the middle of a passenger's vacation. Norwegian Cruise Line sued Florida's top health official in July, requesting a preliminary injunction to let the company implement its vaccine mandate for all passengers and crew. District Judge Kathleen Williams writing that Norwegian "demonstrated that public health will be jeopardized if it is required to suspend its vaccination requirement."

Carnival added that "our protocols are designed to manage and mitigate COVID amongst guests and crew." That's why it's common to see outbreaks of other contagious respiratory or gastrointestinal viruses, like norovirus, aboard cruises. Shares are up nearly 3% since the start of the year, bringing the company's market value to $19.57 billion. Let’s assume for a second that Carnival was able to ensure that no one on its ships could be infected with Covid-19. But, of course, it’s impossible to make this guarantee but play along.

The six guests were immediately quarantined and their close contacts were identified and tested. Three of the four fully-vaccinated passengers had no symptoms and the fourth passenger had mild symptoms, Royal Caribbean said in a statement. The two unvaccinated guests are minors traveling in the same party and are asymptomatic. "Carnival is managing a small number of positive COVID cases on Carnival Vista sailing out of Galveston. This despite all of our crew and almost all of our guests being vaccinated," a spokesperson for Carnival Cruises said in a statement. For example, he is projecting that ships sailing from Port Canaveral will operate at 50% of their double-occupancy capacity from October through December 2021.

COVID-19 outbreaks have been reported on cruise ships in recent months, despite various testing and vaccination requirements among cruise lines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its guidance for travelers who are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 to recommend they avoid cruise ships, regardless of vaccination status. Every little action on cruise ships will be under a microscope in the weeks and months ahead. The fact that they don’t pay U.S. taxes will encourage health authorities in this country to apply very stringent rules on cruise ships. Poole noted that Port Canaveral-based cruise ships historically have sailed at 110% to 115% of their double-occupancy capacities, with three or more people occupying many cabins, typically parents and their children. "We have managed the situation utilizing stringent health protocols which included placing those who tested positive in isolation and close contacts in quarantine."
