Anne didn’t care for Robert and upon Gene’s death, the doll was put into a cedar chest in the attic. Many years later the doll was found and donated to the Key West Art and Historical Society. Gene Otto was an artist… thus the “Artist House” name. Anne played at the La Concha hotel when they moved to Key West. The hotel renamed the room she played in The Rainbow room in her honor as she used to play at The Rainbow Room at Radio City, New York.

It was while painting and continuing his studies in Paris that he met Annette Parker, a native of Boston, who was studying music there at that time. After Anne finished her studies in Paris, the couple moved to New York for several years during which Anne performed at the celebrated Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center as an accomplished pianist. Several years later, the Otto’s moved back to Key West, where Anne dedicated her time to more domestic aspects of life at 534 Eaton Street, their home for the next 40 years. Gene died in 1974, and Anne two years later, but they live on in his art and in their beautiful and beloved house and garden. The spirit and the influence of Gene and Anne and the entire Otto family are still very much a part of the fabric and foundation of The Artist House, and the City of Key West as well. The building, antiques, garden, and “spirit” of The Artist House are a treasure for everyone to enjoy.

As Gene grew older, mishaps and bad luck were always blamed on Robert. Over the years our Key West bed and breakfast has been the focus of several enchanting stories. We can’t vouch for all the stories but they have made the rounds in Key West and around the globe. Every so-called “encounter” was friendly and either involved the “spirit” of Anne or Gene’s stuffed doll and alter ego friend Robert.

The en-suite bathroom gives access to a private balcony with table and chairs. A queen sleigh bed, sitting area which includes a 32” flat screen TV, sofa, wood floor and 2 full bathrooms and 2nd-floor porch. The top of the turret is a unique feature that includes a double bed, a 2nd TV, and seven tall windows around the 12 ft. high, octagon-shaped space. School children walking by our Key West inn would look up and report seeing Robert move from one side of the window to the other.
However, due to the historic significance of our authentic 1890’s truly original Victorian Guesthouse, the Inn is not completely wheelchair accessible. Removal of necessary physical barriers for complete accessibility is not readily achievable as such removal would threaten or destroy the historic significance of the property. This tree-top escape features a queen bed, mini-fridge, private bath, and Smart TV. This unique room overlooks our garden and the rooftops of Old Town, and is accessed via it’s own private stairs.
The en-suite bathrooms have been updated with shiny tiling, rainfall showers, and hairdryers. The two-floor Turret Suite has two bathrooms, one with a claw-foot tub.
